The Mile 7 Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Victor Stephen Kankam, for shooting his tenant with an AK47 rifle.

The incident happened at Ofankor in the Ga North Municipality on 24th May, 2020 when the landlord stormed the residence to demand that the now deceased tenant hand over his keys to him.

When Benjamin Otchere, 31, who was a musician in the area came out of the Chamber and Hall room which rent was due to expire on the midnight of the said date to explain things to him, the Landlord who was armed with an AK47 shot him at close range.

According to Mile 7 Police Commander, ASP George Asare, the Landlord shot the deceased four times at range – in the heart, shoulder, ribs and thighs.

“You could see that his real intention was to kill the tenant who is also a musician because of the way he fired the shots…,” the Police officer said.

DSP Asare continued that a friend of the deceased who later lodged a complain with the Mile 7 Police on the incident had the gun pointed at him when he tried to question the Landlord on why he did that.

“The friend had to run for dear life and later file a complain at our end, otherwise he would have killed him or anyone who was in the house…,” DSP Asare added.

The Police Commander said the statement offered by the suspect is not enough to indicate that he had planned to murder the Benjamin Otchere who was still at the studio recording his first track.

“He had planned to kill the guy, he went to the house and called him out instead of entering the location as he has always done…he was in a bullet proof and carried the AK47 rifle which was fully loaded…,” he added.

Kankam after the incident went to his home and locked the gate and refused to open even when the Police stormed the house to arrest him.

“We (Police) had to force the gate open and enter the house, we saw him with two guns which were all fully loaded when we met him in the house but he did not resist arrest because he saw how prepared the Police was…,” DSP Asare narrated further.

Residents of the area after hearing of the incident thronged the Mile 7 Police station in their numbers to attempt to lynch the suspect but a reinforcement from the Greater Accra Police command helped the Police to normalise the situation and place the suspect in lawful custody.

DSP George Asare however said the angry residents set fire to the building.
