The President, Nana Akufo-Addo will today cut sod for work to resume on abandoned 40-year old maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Work stalled on the project some forty years ago, and successive governments have not ensured its completion to cater for pregnant mothers and their babies.
The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, commissioned the Mother and Baby Unit of KATH to complement the efforts of the medical doctors at the facility.
With a built area of 2,722 square metres, the facility that cost 2.5 million dollars is providing greater and adequate spaces for the different types of procedures at the Hospital.
The facility which was completed within five months, was named after the late Asantehemaa; as Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem II Centre.
The First Lady led the mobilisation of funds from well-meaning Ghanaians and corporate Ghana following a documentary dubbed; “Next to Die” by Multi Media’s Seth Kwame Boateng.
It was expected to drastically help reduce the high infant and maternal mortality that had been recorded by the KATH over the years.
Two years after the commissioning of the Mother and Baby Centre, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo is set to cut sod for the completion of the main block which has been abandoned for forty years.
