Koforidua: New Juaben Assembly suspends activities of Pragia over disregard for Social Distancing protocols

The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has suspended the use of tricycle popularly known as” Pragia” for commercial transportation purposes.

The decision came as a result of continuous breaching of social distancing protocols and reckless driving in the Regional Capital, Koforidua without recourse to safety protocols.

According to the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly (NJMA), the suspension took effect on Monday, May 12, 2020, and will last for two weeks.

The two week period will be used to sensitize and restructure the mode of transportation to ensure adherence to social distancing protocols and road safety regulations.

“Yesterday we held a meeting with Pragia leadership, we noticed that a lot of them were not following the safety protocols. Instead of them to take two at the back they were taking three and four.

“Again, most of them do not abide by the rules of traffic so upon a report from a concerned citizen we decided to convey a meeting with the leadership then we had a dialogue. They all agreed to the need to re-strategise the system,” Hon. Isaac Appaw Gyasi, the MCE of New Juaben South confirmed.

He further noted that the Assembly will take the opportunity to sanitize the operation of the Motorized tricycle that has become a popular means of transport in the municipality by ensuring only licensed riders are allowed to operate henceforth after the suspension.
