Presidential candidate of the United Front Party (UFP), Kwasi Addai Odike has urged the President, Nana Akufo-Addo and the government to consider diverting money for the compilation of the New Voters Register into the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.

The Electoral Commission (EC), in a statement signed by acting Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Sylvia Annor, said their stance on the compilation of new voters register remains unchanged.

“As stated in Article 36 of the 1992 Constitution, the EC would like to reiterate that it shall not be subject to the direction or control of any person or authority in the performance of its functions, except as provided for in the Constitution or any other law consistent with it.

“All stakeholders are hereby reminded that plans are far advanced for the compilation of new voters register with a new voter management system for the upcoming 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. The Commission is, however, sensitive to the current state of affairs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will abide by the necessary precautions and safety protocols in the execution of its mandate when it deems it appropriate to begin the compilation of the register,” part of the EC’s statement read.

Commenting on this on Angel in the Morning on Angel 96.1FM in Kumasi, Odike said that compilation of the new voters register is entirely unnecessary.

He advocated that it would be proper for the country to channel the resources for the compilation of the new register into the fight against COVID-19.

“The compilation of a new voters register very much unnecessary, we should rather invest that money into the fight against COVID-19 which is fast consuming the entire country…,” he said.
