The French Ligue 1 and 2 have been cancelled following the announcement by France Prime Minister that football won’t be played in the country until September 2020.
According to Edouard Philippe, the measure is part of efforts by the European nation to fight the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The French Professional Football League (LFP) announced last week that plans were in place for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to resume on June 17 so the country can meet the August 2, 2020 deadline set by UEFA for the completion of all domestic leagues in Europe.
But the Government of France does not see the resumption of football is a priority especially at a time when the country has recorded significant deaths from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.
‘The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September. The 2019-20 football season cannot return…it will not be possible to practice sport in covered places, nor team or contact sports…,” the PM announced.
