Having established that the country’s prison system is overpopulated, one would understand why the sleeping arrangement would be uncomfortable, especially now that COVID 19 is spreading so fast.
Several pictures of Ghana prisons show how some facilities literally pack inmates so everyone can have space to sleep.
Assessing the impact of COVID 19 on prisons in Ghana on Pure Morning Drive, a senior lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Oteng Abayie appealed to government to as matter of urgency review arrangements in all prisons across the country.
‘Kwame the kind of sardine arrangement in our prisons is terrible. With the presence of COVID 19 in the system; government must immediately review the sleep arrangement in our prisons. This virus can spread easily. Because there’s nothing like physical distancing there.’
‘We stand a risk of this contagious disease if nothing done about it. Majority of the prisons were not purposefully built, and as such are not adequately equipped to address the needs of inmates in the reformation process at this critical times. I’ll appeal to President Akufo-Addo, just as he granted amnesty to some 800 hundred prisons, a review to decongest current state in our prisons will be a step done right’.
He made this appeal on ‘Pure Morning Drive’ hosted by Kwame Adinkrah on Tuesday, April 7.
