Nkoranza North on fire as youth demand removal of ‘incompetent’ DCE

The Youth of Busunya, on Wednesday [March 4, 2020] embarked on a massive demonstration to express their utmost disappointment in their District Chief Executive over her incompetence and asked the President, Nana AddoDanquahAkufo-Addo to sack her.

The Busunya Youth also accused their Member of Parliament, Hon. Derick Odurowho doubles as a Deputy Defence Minister in the Nana Addo government, of only being interested in holding positions but not the development of his constituency.

The about one thousand youth clad in red and black attire, marched through the streets of Busunya, the district capital of the Nkoranza North District of the Bono East Region holding placards with varied negative inscriptions about their DCE, Hon. GiftyAkosah Arthur the Member of Parliament. They chanted war songs and sang dirges to convey their bitter messages to the president.

Among the issues raised by the youth group which also formed part of the petition that was later presented to an official of the district assembly, is the claim that the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Madam GiftyAkosah Arthur, is “seeking her own welfare to the detriment of the district and its citizens.”

Throwing more light on this, the group claimed the DCE had inaccurately accounted for contributions from the chiefs, institutions, citizens, various communities and philanthropists that were done during a 2018 homecoming summit, towards the building of a district hospital. The group therefore says, it cannot tolerate her “inappropriate mode of operation which is selfish and gross disrespect towards the youth and people of Nkoranza North”.

The group further alleged that the DCE is ” indirectly in charge of about six schools under the school feeding programme,” claiming that she “supplies food items with the assembly pickup with registration number (GN 8288 – 13) with Mr Nkrumah Daniel Mr Emmanuel NyarkoBoateng as drivers to enrich herself.”

The Busunya Youth aslo claimed that the DCE has been awarding contracts to contractors who are not duly registered under the district assembly, a situation it says “is against the Local Government act”, adding that all such “unknown” contractors carry out their activities using the vehicles and pickups of the Assembly.

Madam GiftyAkosah Arthur the DCE, has again been accused of showing “gross disrespect towards the chiefs, assembly members and people of Nkoranza North”, a situation the group alleged came about because of the Assembly Members’ decision to reject a proposal by the DCE to spend an amount of three hundred and fifty thousand Ghana cedis (Gh₵350,000.00) on the construction of a fence wall around her residence.

Capping their unmet expectations by the DCE, the group said the DCE has also reneged on her 2018 promise to fix the Busunya town roads.

As a result of these issues, the concerned Youth of Nkoranza North for Development has vowed that “they can no longer work with or accept Madam GiftyAkosah Arthur as the DCE for the District.” They also want the District Assembly Engineer, Jerry Alfred Asmah to seek transfer from the district immediately.

Apart from these demands, the placards some of the demonstrators carried also came with their own demands, with some of them reading as follows: “Nkoranza North deserves better”; “Gifty must go”; “Incompetent MP”; “Incompetent DCE”, “We need change”, “Where is the hospital money?”; “Dero, yabrɛ wo!”; ” Incompetent DCE must go”; “No development, no vote”; ” the DCE is killing the youth”; etc.

When the group eventually marched to the District Assembly to present the petition to the DCE, she was nowhere to receive the petition. None of the major decision makers of the assembly was present. But after some wait, the police managed to get an official to receive the petition on behalf of the DCE.

The petition includes copies for the District Coordinating Director of Nkoranza North, the Minister of Local Government and the Chief of Staff at the seat of government, the Jubilee House.
