Board member of Continental Club Masters, Accra Hearts of oak, Alhaji Akambi has boldly insisted that the current playing body of the club possesses similar qualities as the ‘great’ 64 Battalions squad.
It will be recalled that the Hearts of Oak team in the late 90s and early 2000s popularly known as the ’64 Battallions’ made a clean sweep of trophies on both the local and continental scene with the late Cecil Jones Attuquayefio as coach.
Goalkeeper Sammy Adjei, Eben Dida Armah, Jacob Nettey, Amankwah Mireku, Ishmael Addo and others were great key players in the squad that conquered won several silver ware.
Following the recent consistent form the team had picked by going four games unbeaten, the experience board member has started comparing the current squad with the team which many believed to be the greatest squad ever to have donned the Hearts jersey.
Alhaji Akambi speaking on Angel FM’s Saddick Adams claimed the current playing body can be compared to the 64 Batallions squad.
“Current Hearts of Oak team has similar qualities of the 64 battalions squad that conquered Africa in the year 2000,” he claimed.
He then noted that with the zeal, telepathy and momentum the team has gathered, it will be hard for opponents in the ongoing league campaign to defeat the Phobians.
“It will be very difficult for any team to beat them [Hearts of oak] in the league,” Alhaji Akambi stressed.
Hearts of Oak who last lost a game against Medeama SC at the Akoon Park will hope to keep their momentum as they face arch rivals, Asante Kotoko on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
