‘Bye Bye budget’, ‘Fare thee well’ – Minority reacts to 2020 budget

“Bye bye ooo, bye bye oo, bye bye, go, go and go”, the minority Members of Parliament sang after Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta ended the presentation of the 2020 budget statement on the floor of Parliament.

According to the Minority, the budget statement will be last to be presented by the Akufo-Addo administration as it hopes the government will be defeated in the 2020 elections.

The Minority while singing the repeated lines of the song showed placards with the inscriptions boldly written on them.

As they sat down to allow the Speaker of Parliament, Mike Aaron Oquaye to continue with proceedings in the house, the majority rose to their feet.

They had a song to sing as well.

“Oye oo, Oye ooo…Asempa papa bi a mate, oye…,” the voices echoed in the chamber of the Chinese furnished law making house.

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who was in the chamber all this while will not be left out of the singing.

The soft-spoken ‘Economic Maradona’ offered his usual smile and joined in the chorus of the MPs who came to the house on the ticket of his party.

He needed to back the MPs who would in three days have to sit down to deliberate on the budget before approving the financial estimates.

The clearly vociferous majority backed by the Vice President could not stop the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu from describing the budget as a ‘farewell budget’ either.
