Why spend $10m on collating database of cocoa farmers when EC has all data? – Sampson Ahi asks COCOBOD

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sefwi Bodi in the Western North Region, Sampson Ahi has asked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD to contact the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) for the database of cocoa farmers in the country.

Speaking on Angel 102.9FM’s Accountable to the People, the MP said this will be the only way of ensuring that the organization gets the best right database on cocoa farmers.

COCOBOD had a $600 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) for the development of cocoa approved by Parliament.

The CEO of COCOBOD, Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo assured that every cent of the amount will be put to good use.

“It will be used in the way that we agreed with the lenders and in a way that will help us realise the benefits anticipated out of this exercise,” Mr Aidoo told the Daily Graphic.

Commenting on this, the Sefwi Bodi MP said the breakdown of the loan is enough to communicate that COCOBOD will misapply the facility.

He cited the use of $10.6 million out of the $600 million for the collection of database of farmers as one of the areas where the loan will be misapplied.

“They are using $10.6 million for just the database of cocoa farmers, but I ask, if you need the database of cocoa farmers, why don’t you go to the EC or even the NIA, they have the details of all Ghanaians…,” he said on the show.
