Ursula Owusu has no power to tell Telcos how to charge CST – Sam George

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region has called on Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to stop harassing telecommunication companies in Ghana on the Communication Service Tax (CST).

The Minister, Sam George said ought to tone down on the way she talks and directs the telecommunication companies on how they go about their activities as according to her, she does not have the power to do what she is currently doing.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has been on the neck of the Telcos insisting that they are deliberately charging the CST upfront just to make government unpopular.

She has thus called on them to find other means of charging the new tax insisting her Ministry would find means of dealing with them if they don’t halt it.

Commenting on this threat from the Communications Minister, Sam George said the Minister ought to know that it does not fall within her domain to instruct the Telcos on how they should charge the CST.

“Parliament enacted the laws on CST levying the Telecommunication companies, they are complying to this but the Minister ought to know that she has no power to direct the Telcos how they should charge the tax…,” he said on Accra-based Okay FM as monitored by Angelfmonliengh.com.

He further claimed that the Minister ought to learn from her colleague at the Energy Ministry who has not directed PDS as to how they should be charging consumers.

“PDS has been charging electricity consumers some taxes, why does Amewu not come forth to also fight the PDS people too…,? he queried.
