Former Ghana Premier League top scorer, Alex Asamoah has disclosed that he chose the number 3 shirt at his new club, UPI-ONM FC of Benin in honor of Africa’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup, Asamoah Gyan.
Alex who holds the record for the most expensive transfer in done the local league when he joined Asante Kotoko from AshantiGold in 2008 for a fee of 400,000 Ghana cedis said; his club felt in love with his name ‘Asamoah’ and hence, decided to honour the former Ghana Captain.
“I’ve always maintained that the Asamoah’s are blessed,” he said
“So I opted for the Jersey number ‘3’ because when they realized that my name is Asamoah, they kept mentioning the name of Asamoah Gyan,” he explained
He continued “So I gladly accepted it in his honour because that’s an iconic Jersey of a senior brother, Asamoah Gyan. And I am hoping to perform for them with the same zeal that Gyan displays whenever he’s on the field.” Alex told Don Summer on Angel FM’s First Half Sports.
