Alajo Coup plotters wanted to attack ‘Defense Ministry’ – Major Oduro

Deputy Defense Minister, Major Derek Oduro has said that the three persons who were arrested for allegedly plotting to stage a coup in the country intended to attack the Defense Ministry.

According to him, the three persons including a medical doctor in good standing who was arrested at Alajo in the Greater Accra Region intended to attack the Defense Ministry as part of their plots.

“The intelligence we gathered at a point indicated that these young men wanted to attack the Defense Ministry…,” he said on Accra-based Starr FM as monitored by

Three persons – Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, owner of Cidatel Hospital Hospital, Mr. Ezor Kafui (a local weapon manufacturer) and Mr. Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (aka BB or ADC) -were arrested last weekend for alleging plotting to destablise the country.

Reports by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah also indicated that two other Military personnel have also been arrested in connection with the plot.

The three who were arrested earlier have however been put before court and charged with conspiracy to manufacture arms and ammunition without lawful authority and possession of explosives and firearms without lawful excuse.

Their pleas were not taken by the court.

Inferior weapons

Some Ghanaians have been of the opinion that the weapons that were manufactured by the three cannot be used to stage a coup.

Major Boakye Gyan who played a role in the 1979 Coup Detat that toppled the Late Hilla Limann government has claimed that the weapons seized from the alleged coup plotters cannot even kill a squirrel.

But the Deputy Minister insists that the government will not take chances as according to him, one does not always need sophisticated weapons to take over government.

“You don’t need too many weapons to launch an attack. Some years ago, someone used just a pair of scissors to attack people at GBC…,” he said.
