Some residents of Kyebi in the Eastern Region have called on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop denigrating the office of the Okyenhene.
The angry residents who demonstrated in the town against the major opposition party accused some members of the party of always making frantic efforts to run down the position of the Okyenhene and the entire Akyem Abuakwa Kingdom.
The residents registered their displeasure when they joined the Okyeman Traditional Council to march through some principal streets of the vibrant town to protest against the NDC and some of its members.
The kinsmen of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo accused the NDC of being fond of seizing every available opportunity to cast aspersions at the Okyenhene, Amoatia Ofori Panin II.
“NDC, your filth won’t stick”; “Zu of NDC, you are a disgrace”; NDC, you can’t divide Ghana”; “This nonsense from NDC must stop”; “NDC koraa what has Okyenhene and Kyebi done to you?”; “NDC, leave Kyebi alone”; “Shameless NDC”; were the inscriptions on some of the placards.
Others included “NDC and Zu, Okyeman has rejected you”, “NDC, you won’t get away this time”.
The demonstration was organised to protest a comment by the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Kwame Zu that, but for former president John Dramani Mahama, the Okyenhene would still be “drinking water with animals”.
He made the statement at a demonstration organised by some opposition parties to protest hardship in the country.
This statement did not well sit with the people of the politically vibrant state of Akyem Abuakwa and their chiefs.
Mr Zu has however offered an unqualified apology to the Okyenhene.
