Barcelona star Lionel Messi was crowned the FIFA men’s best player of the year with 46 votes, seeing off fellow nominees, Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the prize, in what many thought was going to go to Van Dijk after his Champions League victory with Liverpool and also being crowned the UEFA best player of the year award months ago for his exceptional performances.

The victory is Messi’s first since these awards first introduced in 2016, with Ronaldo previously winning twice and Luka Modric last year. The Award is the 32-year old’s sixth, moving one ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi’s Barca were knocked out of the Champions League semi-final by Liverpool while losing the Copa Del Rey final to Valencia despite claiming the la Liga title as he ended the season as the overall top scorer in Europe.Below is how the votes went.
